Ministry

"But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that i received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God."

– Acts 20:24

Over the past few weeks, I have shared the principle of Sowing and Reaping — how God multiplies the seeds we faithfully plant over time — and 100x Soil — being strategic and intentional about where we sow our seeds. One of the most meaningful seeds we can sow is in our ministry — serving others in the name of Jesus.

When many people hear the word ministry, they think of pastors, missionaries, or those in full-time church roles. While those callings are incredibly important, the truth is much bigger: every follower of Jesus is called to ministry. Ministry simply means service. It is taking the gifts, influence, and opportunities God has entrusted to us and using them to bless others and point them toward Christ. For many of us, especially within the Abide & Lead community, our ministry often unfolds right where we live and work — in our homes, businesses, and communities.

God does not call most believers out of their professions to minister. He calls us to minister in and through them!

Key Principles of Ministry:

  • Ministry Begins with the Heart of a Servant: At its core, ministry is simply serving others in the name of Jesus. Jesus modeled ministry through humility and service. He fed the hungry, healed the hurting, encouraged the discouraged, and loved people where they were. As we abide in Christ, a natural fruit of that relationship is a desire to serve others. Ministry is not driven by obligation — it flows from gratitude for the grace we have received from our relationship with Jesus. When our hearts are aligned with Christ, service becomes a joy rather than a burden. “Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” — Matthew 20:28

  • Every Believer Has a Ministry Platform: God has uniquely positioned each of us with gifts, influence, and opportunities to impact others. One of the most profound moments in my own faith journey came years ago when I was talking with Pastor Chris Hodges about possibly going into full-time vocational ministry. He simply said, “Duane, God can use you right where you are. You can minister to people through your business platform who may never walk into a church.” That perspective changed everything for me. Over the past 25 years, I have seen God do “immeasurably more than I could have imagined” – Ephesians 3:20 through simple acts of service, encouragement, generosity, and leadership within the marketplace. Your business, your leadership, your relationships — they are all platforms for ministry every day. “Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly.” — Romans 12:6

  • Ministry Multiplies Through the Body of Christ: While we each have unique callings, we are not meant to do ministry alone. God designed His Church as a body where every person contributes. Being connected to and engaged with a healthy local church provides spiritual covering, encouragement, and opportunities to serve together. It is incredible to witness what God can do when believers collectively use their gifts to serve others and advance His Kingdom. Over the years, I have been deeply blessed to serve alongside incredible ministries such as Church of the Highlands and Highlands College, to name a few. In each of these contexts, I’ve seen firsthand how God uses ordinary people who are simply willing to serve where they are planted. Ministry is not about having all the answers. It’s about being available. “To equip His people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up.” — Ephesians 4:12

Ministry is not reserved for a few people with special titles. It is the calling of every believer. We minister when we: Encourage someone who is struggling, Invest in/Mentor a young leader, Serve our families well, Lead our teams with godly values, Share what God has done in our lives by sharing our testimony. Often the most powerful ministry happens through simple acts of love and service done consistently over time. Jesus summed it up beautifully: Love the Lord your God… and love your neighbor as yourself.” — Matthew 22:37–39 That is ministry!!

Challenge Question: Where has God uniquely positioned you to minister to others right now — in your family, your business, your church, or your community? And are you intentionally using your gifts and influence for eternal impact? You can start today, “Just Do It”!!!!!!

Prayer: Father, thank You for the privilege of Ministry: serving You by serving others. Help us recognize the ministry opportunities You place in front of us every day. Give us hearts that are humble, willing, and attentive to the needs around us. Use our lives, our leadership, and our influence to reflect Your love and bring others closer to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

As followers of Jesus, let us walk in our calling and anointing as ministers of the gospel of Jesus!
