Stewardship
"His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!"
– Matthew 25:23
Stewardship is the faithful and responsible management of something entrusted to our care. At its core, biblical stewardship begins with a simple but profound truth: God owns it all. Everything we have—our time, talent, treasure, relationships, influence, and opportunities—belongs to Him. We are not owners; we are managers entrusted with His resources to accomplish His purposes. “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.” – Colossians 3:23
As believers, the question is not “What do I want to do with what I have?” The better question is: “What does God desire to do through what He has entrusted to me?”
Over the years, God has continually shaped my understanding of stewardship. How we handle money and possessions reveals much about our hearts, but stewardship is about much more than money, possessions, and giving. It’s about recognizing that every gift and blessing carries both privilege and responsibility. This week, Amy and I attended the Blue Trust Legacy Summit in Atlanta and heard a talk from John Maxwell on Stewardship. We were reminded once again that stewardship touches every area of life—from family, to business, to ministry. When we begin to live with a steward’s mindset, everything changes. Our perspective shifts from ownership to responsibility, from accumulation to impact, and from temporary gain to eternal fruit.
The following are a few key Biblical Principles on Stewardship:
God Is the Owner — We Are the Stewards: God is the rightful owner of all things. Scripture makes this unmistakably clear. We are entrusted—not entitled. This understanding brings humility and accountability. With greater blessing comes greater responsibility. “To the LORD your God belong the heavens… the earth and everything in it.” – Deuteronomy 10:14 Stewardship invites us into God’s master plan to leverage what He gives us for Kingdom purpose and eternal impact. “The world is Mine, and all that is in it.” – Psalm 50:12
We Are Called to Faithful Management: Everything God gives us is meant to be used—not hidden, wasted, or hoarded. When we steward faithfully, God expands our influence and responsibility. “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace.” – 1 Peter 4:10 God blesses us not merely for enjoyment, but for impact. We can enjoy His blessings—but we must never forget the purpose behind them. “Command those who are rich in this present age not to be arrogant, nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment”. 1 Timothy 6:17
Faithful Stewardship Produces Fruit and Increase: God measures stewardship by fruit. Are our lives producing spiritual impact? Are people being strengthened, encouraged, and drawn closer to Christ through how we live? “By their fruit you will recognize them.” – Matthew 7:16–17 When we live as faithful stewards, God brings increase—not always immediately, but consistently over time. “Whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance.” – Matthew 25:29 This is not prosperity for self—it is provision for purpose. God blesses His faithful stewards with more.
Stewardship is not about what we possess—it’s about how we manage what God has entrusted to us. When we live with a steward’s heart, God entrusts us with more—not so we can accumulate more, but so we can multiply impact for His glory. I have personally experienced this truth over the past 25 years of walking with Jesus. God truly does what He promises: “He is willing and able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power at work within us.” – Ephesians 3:20
This is the abundant life—the life that is truly life!
Challenge Question: Where might God be inviting you to grow as a steward—of your time, relationships, resources, or influence? Are you managing what He’s entrusted to you in a way that aligns with His purposes? Are you stewarding the things He has entrusted to you for His Kingdom or yours?
Closing Prayer: Father, thank You for entrusting us with so much. Help us to live with humility, wisdom, and faithfulness as stewards of all You have given. Align our hearts with Your purposes and teach us to manage our time, talents, and resources in ways that glorify You and build Your Kingdom. May our lives produce fruit that lasts for eternity. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Have a great week living as faithful stewards—experiencing the life that is truly life.
