Built to Last

"One generation shall commend your works to another and shall declare your mighty acts."

– Psalm 145:4

This past week, we hosted our Founders Advisors leadership team and their spouses at Pursell Farms for our annual leadership offsite. This is one of my favorite weeks of the year. There is something powerful about stepping away from the day-to-day demands of the business, gathering the people you love and lead, and casting vision together forthefuture. This year feels especially meaningful as we continue forward in the succession and transition process that I believe will shape the future of our firm for decades to come. We are intentionally investing in the next generation of leaders, selling equity shares to younger partners, and doing the hard and rewarding work of building something that will outlast all of us. That is the goal and that is the vision: building a firm that is truly Built to Last.

As a business, we do measure and track key metrics like deal flow, revenue, profit margin, etc. As a Kingdom-led business, we also ask deeper and more important questions like: is what we are building aligned with God's purpose, and will it outlast us? I am convinced that the key to building a business that endures is not found primarily in strategy or systems, as important as those things are.It is found in building a healthy and flourishing culture with a clear Kingdom-hearted vision and an impact-driven mission. We all want to be part of something bigger than ourselves that is truly making a difference. That is the kind of firm I am committed to building at Founders, and it is the heartbeat behind everything we are doing through Abide and Lead.

Three Principles of Building a Kingdom Business That Lasts

  • Build on the Right Foundation: Every business and every life will be tested over time. The question is not whether the storms will come but whether what we have built will stand when they do. Jesus made it clear that the only foundation that endures is one built on His word and His ways. For us at Founders, that means integrity, servant leadership, excellence, and generosity are not just nice values on a wall. They are the bedrock of everything we do. Strategy matters and execution matters, but values alignment matters most. When our foundation is right, everything built on top of it has a fighting chance to last.

"Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock."Matthew 7:24

  • Pursue Purpose Over Profit: A Kingdom-driven business is not less ambitious; it is differently ambitious. We pursue excellence not just for personal gain but for God's glory and the good of the people we serve. At Founders, our stated purpose is to "be servant leaders who value relationships and results". That purpose is what separates us from a transactional advisory firm and positions us to be something much more significant. Impact is not a byproduct of what we do. It is the mission. When our teams understand that their daily work is connected to a higher calling, it changes everything about how they show up, how they serve clients, and how they treat one another.

"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward."Colossians 3:23-24

  • Lead as Stewards, Not Owners, and Think Generationally: Perhaps the most important shift in building something that lasts is moving from an ownership mindset to a stewardship mindset. Clearly understanding that God has entrusted us with this firm, these people, and this platform for a season and for a purpose. Our job is not to control and accumulate but to multiply and release. That means investing deeply in the next generation of leaders, giving them real ownership and responsibility, and trusting God with the outcomes. A good person leaves an inheritance for their children's children, and the same principle applies in business. We are not just building a company. We are building a culture, shaping the next generation of servant leaders, and leaving a legacy of faith and fruitfulness that will ripple forward for decades.

"A good person leaves an inheritance for their children's children, but a sinner's wealth is stored up for the righteous." Proverbs 13:22

When Kingdom values drive our business decisions, profit and purpose can and do thrive together. The ripple effects go far beyond the bottom line and touch lives, lift families and communities, and bring light to dark places. As I looked around the room this week at Pursell Farms at our next generation of leaders God has brought to Founders, I was filled with faith and gratitude. He has done immeasurably more than I could have imagined in building this firm, and I believe the best is still ahead. That is what happens when we build on the right foundation for the right reasons and steward well what God has entrusted to us.

Challenge Question:Are you building your business, your team, and your leadership on a foundation that will outlast you? What is one area where God may be inviting you to shift from an ownership mindset to a stewardship mindset so that what you are building can truly be Built to Last?

Prayer: Father, thank You for the privilege of building and leading teams for Your glory. Give us the wisdom to build on the right foundation, the courage to pursue purpose over profit, and the humility to lead as faithful stewards of what You have entrusted to us. May the firms and families we lead reflect Your character, advance Your Kingdom, and leave a legacy that outlasts us for generations to come. We trust You with the outcomes and commit the work of our hands to You. In Jesus name, Amen.

We are not just building companies; we are building legacies. May we build wisely, lead faithfully, and trust God with everything we cannot control. Have a great week!
