Family, Heritage, Legacy
"One generation shall commend Your works to another and shall declare Your might acts."
– Psalm 145:44
I am coming off an incredibly meaningful week — celebrating Easter (Resurrection Day), the greatest moment in history for us as believers, and hosting our Spring Heritage Forum at Pursell Farms with 27 high-capacity leaders. It was a powerful reminder of God’s design for family and the incredible opportunity we have to build something that lasts far beyond our own lives.
Family is one of God’s greatest gifts. It is also one of our greatest responsibilities. As leaders, we are not just building businesses and careers — we are fostering godly legacies. The question of our Heritage is notif we are passing something on… but what we are passing on.
Here are a few things to consider as you think about cultivating a godly family, heritage, and Legacy.
Family Is God’s plan/design for Generational Impact:Family was the first institution God created — designed to pass down faith, values, and identity from one generation to the next.“Train up a child in the way he should go…”Proverbs 22, “He has set eternity in the human heart…”Ecclesiastes 3:11 God has placed within each of us a desire to be part of something that lasts. That is not accidental — it is eternal. As leaders, we must recognize that our greatest opportunity for impact is not just what we build professionally, but what we cultivate within our families. This is where true multiplication happens — generationally.
Healthy Families Require Intentional Leadership and Healing: We serve a God of order, peace, and restoration — but we live in a broken world. Left unattended, dysfunction and generational patterns (curses) can quietly pass from one generation to the next.“For God is not a God of disorder but of peace.”1 Corinthians 14:33 If we desire to cultivate strong families, it starts with us: 1) by remaining connected to Jesus through a daily abiding walk, 2) by Living with humility and being willing to grow and be refined in Christ, 3) by Being Willing to create environments where truth, healing, and honest communication can, take place, even when it hurts. One of the greatest lessons I continue to learn — often through Amy and our adult children — is the importance of creating a safe space for real conversations. Many of the things that shape our families are hidden beneath the surface: wounds, assumptions, and patterns we may not even see. This is where humility and outside perspective can be a gift — through counselors, coaches, pastors, and trusted advisors.Healthy families are not perfect — they are intentional.
Legacy Is Built Through Clarity of Values and Empowering the Next Generation: A strong family legacy does not happen by accident — it is built through clarity and consistency over time.“Know therefore that the Lord your God is God… keeping His covenant of love to a thousand generations…”Deuteronomy 7:9 Family values define who we are and how we live. They become the foundation that carries forward into future generations. For our family, we have identified values like:Faith, Family/Heritage, Perseverance, Health, and Generosity. But one of the most important lessons I have learned is this: Legacy is not about control — it is about empowerment. As our children grow and build their own families, our role shifts from directing to equipping. We are not called to impose our vision on them, but to help them discover and walk in God’s vision for their own families. This is where generational blessing takes root — when each generation takes ownership of their faith, values, and calling.
Building a God-honoring family, heritage, and legacy is not easy— but it is one of the most meaningful investments we will ever make during our short time on this earth. It requires:Intentionality, Humility, Patience & Faith; the return is generational. As leaders, we often think in terms of ROI. But when it comes to family, we are talking about eternal return on investment (EROI).What we sow today will impact generations we may never meet.
Challenge Question: What intentional step can I take today to strengthen my family’s foundation and invest in a legacy that honors God for generations to come? Do a family values exercise, ask your wife and children about their goals and dreams, invite your family to meet together with your life advisors, host a family gathering/meeting?
Prayer: Father, thank you for the gift of family and the opportunity to build a godly heritage and lasting, eternal legacy. Give us wisdom and humility as we lead our families. Heal what needs healing, strengthen what needs strengthening, and align our lives and families with Your truth and design. Help us to be intentional in passing down faith, values, and love to the next generation. May our lives reflect Your goodness for generations to come. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
I pray God brings health, healing, and unity to your family in Christ Jesus!
