"As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you; you shall be comforted in Jerusalem"

– Isaiah 66:13

As we celebrate Mother’s Day this weekend, I’ve been reflecting on the incredible gift and impact of mothers in our lives. There is something so powerful, so natural, and so pure about a mother’s love that it’s hard to fully put into words. For many of us, when we think about love in its most tangible form—patient, sacrificial, enduring—we think of our moms. God, in His perfect design, chose to bring life into the world through mothers. And in doing so, He gave us one of the most visible and personal reflections of His own love.

3 Godly Attributes of Motherly Love

  • Motherly Love Reflects God’s Nurturing Heart: A mother’s love is often the first expression of comfort, care, and protection we experience in life. “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast…? Though she may forget, I will not forget you!” Isaiah 49:15 From the very beginning, God uses the imagery of a mother to describe His own love for us. That tells us something powerful: Motherly love is not random—it is divine in nature. It nurtures, protects, and creates a foundation of security that allows children to grow and flourish.

  • Motherly Love Is Sacrificial and Unconditional: There is something uniquely selfless about a mother’s love. It does not need to be earned—it is freely given. “Love is patient, love is kind… it always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”1 Corinthians 13:4,7 From carrying a child for nine months to the countless unseen sacrifices made over a lifetime, mothers consistently demonstrate an unconditional, godly love that gives without expecting anything in return. This kind of love shapes identity, builds confidence, and reflects the very heart of Christ. God is “Our Father” in heaven, but in His divine nature, He shows His essence and tangible love through the love of a mother.

  • A Mother’s Influence Shapes Generations: The impact of a mother extends far beyond the moment—it echoes into future generations. “Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.” Proverbs 31:28 A mother’s influence is one of the most powerful forces in shaping character, faith, and values. I believe the role of a mother is one of the most valuable assignments on earth that has the potential for generational impact.

I’ve experienced this personally through my own mom, Lillie, who loved God with all of her heart and loved me unconditionally, and had a profound influence on the man I’ve become, especially in my walk of faith. Even though she went to be with the Lord over 20 years ago, her impact is still alive in me today.

I’ve also had the privilege of watching my wife, Amy, pour her life into our three daughters, and now seeing that same love expressed through my older daughters, Mary Kathryn and Saige, as they raise our grandchildren. It is truly incredible to witness the generational impact of a mother’s love. See attached pics of some special mom’s in my life.

Mothers carry one of the highest callings and greatest responsibilities on earth. They don’t just raise children—they shape lives, build faith, and influence generations. As leaders, husbands, fathers, and sons, we have the opportunity to: Honor and celebrate the mothers in our lives, Support and encourage them in their calling, Recognize the eternal significance of what they do every single day. Motherly love is one of the clearest pictures we have of God’s love in action.

Challenge Question: Have I intentionally honored, appreciated, and supported the mothers in my life—and do I recognize the eternal impact of their role?

Prayer: Father, thank You for the gift of mothers and the incredible love they represent. Thank You for designing family in such a powerful and meaningful way. Bless and strengthen every mother today—give them wisdom, peace, and encouragement as they continue to pour into the lives of their children. Help us to honor them well and recognize the lasting impact they have on generations to come. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
